Best automatic litter box under $300
Buy the Els Pet Orbitie ($249.99). Its safety system is 4 gravity sensors and 2 dual-beam infrared detectors (Els Pet Orbitie: maker’s page), and the cleaning cycle pauses if a cat is inside or steps in during a cycle (Els Pet FAQ).
For less, buy the CatLink Scooper SE ($219.00), with infrared, gravity and anti-pinch sensors; right at the cap, the PETKIT PuraMax 2 ($299.99), which pauses when a cat enters.

How to check a litter box is safe
An automatic box turns a drum or moves a rake while a cat may be near it. Three things matter, in this order.
- It stops when a cat is inside. Look for a named sensor (gravity, weight, infrared, proximity) and a sentence that says the cycle pauses or halts. A bare “safe design” is not enough.
- It names the smallest cat it is safe for. Gravity and weight sensors read weight, so a kitten under the stated weight may not trigger them.
- It has more than one kind of sensor. The Orbitie pairs gravity sensors with infrared detectors. The Scooper SE adds an anti-pinch sensor.
The boxes in the table name the sensors they use, some in more detail than others.
Els Pet Orbitie: the sensor record is clearest
Why: Els Pet says: “Our safety system features 4 gravity sensors and 2 dual-beam infrared detectors, providing comprehensive protection for your cat.” (Els Pet Orbitie: maker’s page) And: “The cleaning cycle is automatically paused if a cat is inside the box or enters during the cycle, ensuring the safety and comfort of your pet. The cleaning process only resumes once the cat has exited the litter box.” (Els Pet FAQ)
CatLink Scooper SE: the lower price
Why: CatLink says: “Protection Never Stops. Multiple sensors detect cat entry and halt bin rotation to prevent injuries.” (CatLink Scooper SE: maker’s page) The smallest cat it lists is 3.5 lb. It works with no Wi-Fi from its manual buttons (CatLink Scooper SE: maker’s page). It costs $30.99 less than the Orbitie.
PETKIT PuraMax 2: right at the cap
Why: PETKIT’s manual lists a proximity sensor and says: “The cat enters while the device is in operation (the device will automatically pause and alert).” (PETKIT: PuraMax 2 user manual) Cats under 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) are not recommended. It costs $299.99, one cent under the cap.
PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro Legacy: the lowest price, a different design
It rakes the box instead of turning a drum, and it uses crystal litter only (PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro Legacy: maker’s page). PetSafe says it starts a cycle only when the cat is gone (PetSafe: ScoopFree Crystal Pro Legacy). It costs $129.99, and you keep buying crystal litter trays.
Questions
How do I know an automatic litter box will not hurt my cat?
Look for a named sensor that stops the drum when a cat is inside, and a sentence that says it pauses. The table above lists each maker’s own words.
Can I use one with a kitten?
Check the smallest-cat weight in the table. Gravity and weight sensors read weight, and a kitten below the stated weight may not set them off. For a kitten under 2.5 lb, Els Pet says to switch on Kitten Mode in the app.
Do I need Wi-Fi?
No, for the CatLink Scooper SE: the maker says it works without Wi-Fi using manual buttons (CatLink Scooper SE: maker’s page). The other boxes here have an app for alerts and settings.
