What makes a self-emptying robot worth it
The point of the dock is that you stop emptying the bin. So the number that matters most is how many days the dock bag lasts before you change it. Every robot on this page has a dock bag rated for at least 49 days. The Dreame D20 Air Plus stretches that to 120.
Makers print “up to”. A house with a shedding pet or a lot of carpet fills a bag sooner. Treat the number as a ceiling and compare the robots by it.
Dreame D20 Air Plus: the one worth the extra money
Why: 120 days is the longest bag life of the six (Dreame D20 Air Plus: maker’s page). Its 4 L bag is about 1.5 times the size of the Roborock Q7 M5+ bag. It costs $269.99.
Shark Navigator: the lowest price
Why: Shark says its base self-empties for up to 60 days (Shark Navigator: maker’s page), and the robot maps with LiDAR. There is no mop in the box. It is $40.00 less than the Dreame.
Roborock Q7 M5+: the Roborock option
Roborock lists a 2.7 L dust bag good for up to 7 weeks (49 days) (Roborock Q7 M5+: maker’s page), 10,000 Pa of suction and a mop. It costs $249.99.
Questions
How much does a self-emptying robot vacuum cost?
Of the six we checked against a maker’s own page, prices run from $229.99 to $329.99 on Amazon.
How often do I empty the dock?
Makers say between 49 and 120 days for these six, as an “up to” figure. The Dreame D20 Air Plus is at the long end.
Do I have to buy bags for the dock?
Yes. A self-emptying dock moves dirt into a bag, and the bag is something you replace. A longer-lasting bag means fewer replacements.
