Whisker asks for the carbon filter and the odour-trap packs to be changed every few weeks, and more often the more cats use the unit; the company sells them bundled with liners, litter and wipes at a discount. The globe needs a full wash only every month or few, beyond the clump and drawer routine. The app is free and nothing the box needs sits behind a paywall; Whisker+ is an optional tier adding activity history and video. The warranty runs 1 year, extendable for a fee, and the unit ships with a three-month in-home trial: return it inside that window for a refund.
The complaints are consistent enough to plan around. Some report the machine simply stopping, after about a month of use in some accounts and within the first two months in others, where Whisker's fix was a replacement power adapter, not a new unit. Some describe pressing the cowling's reset button over and over to keep it cycling. Some say the waste-drawer liners tear well before owners expect to replace them, forcing early swaps, and some say urine works under the tub and globe assembly and leaves a smell persistent cleaning does not remove. It runs ordinary clumping litter, and at $270 on the listing we verified it is the cheapest of every unit we track whose maker will commit to a cat count at all. One thing to know about that ceiling: Els Pet says two different things on the same page, that the Orbitie has no weight limit and that it recommends cats under 21 lb. It states a 12 L drawer and 20 days between emptyings, the longest drawer life of every unit we track whose maker also publishes a cat count, though it never says how many cats that figure assumes. The warranty is 1 year, the same as the main pick, with a money-back window of about three months.
The litter rule is tighter than clumping suggests: Els Pet asks for clumping or scoopable litter and warns against low-quality bentonite that turns muddy and non-clumping litters such as wood pellets. For safety it lists 4 gravity sensors + 2 dual-beam infrared detectors, plus a protective-pause and remote safety lock. None of that tells you how the box ages, and that is the trade at this price: the limits check out, and nobody has told us what year two looks like.

Nothing is required to make it clean. Petlibro says it works fully out of the box with no subscription; the paid video tiers only add longer history and multi-device support. Read the warranty terms before you skip them: Petlibro ties the free repair-or-replacement benefit to an active paid subscription, not to owning the machine. The camera is the other thing to weigh: it does live view and short clips, and by Petlibro's own service agreement that recorded video and photo data is permanently deleted when your paid service period ends. If the Wi-Fi drops it carries on recognising cats, detecting visits and cleaning; only the cloud features pause.
The consumables are the carbon deodorizer and the litter mat, which Petlibro says to replace about quarterly in a one-cat home; assume sooner with 3. The cleaning is the weak part. Clumps left behind is the complaint owners repeat, and in a 3-cat house that is exactly the job you paid for. Cats.com scored it well all the same and flagged that complaint in the same review, which is the honest shape of this pick: a roomy, well-rated box with an inconsistent cycle. It is also fussier about where it stands than the other two picks. If reliable sifting matters more to you than a wide entrance, the Whisker Litter-Robot 4 is the pick.

The first month
The first week belongs to the cats, not the box. None of the three makers publishes transition advice, so take this as ours rather than theirs: leave the old tray beside the new one until all 3 are using the new one, then take the tray away. That usually means one hold-out setting the pace for everyone. Expect to top litter up more often than you planned, because a sifting box carries a little out with every clump it lifts.
Then the rhythm sets in, and it is faster than the packaging suggests. Petlibro makes a single self-cleaning box, so any listing offering a Petlibro open-top is using a reseller's word. How many cats can these actually handle?
The maker's cat count is a drawer-and-cycle rating, not a limit the box enforces at the door. Whisker rates the Litter-Robot 4 for 4, Els Pet rates the Pet Orbitie for 5, and Petlibro rates the Luma Smart Litter Box for 10; all three clear 3. A box rated under your count is not unsafe. It is a box you empty every day.
Do automatic litter boxes work for kittens and small cats?
Your lightest at 6 pounds clears all three with room. The floor of the range is where the sensor can be sure a cat is in the box, and that is what starts and stops a cycle. Whisker's floor is 3 lb and it says the box suits kittens and large breeds alike; Petlibro's is 2.2 lb but written for adult cats; Els Pet's is 2.5 lb, under which it asks you to switch on a kitten mode in the app.
How often will I be emptying the drawer with 3 cats?
More often than the box art implies, because not one of the published figures was written for 3 cats. Whisker's 8 days is a one-cat number, Petlibro quotes its drawer for a smaller household, and Els Pet's 20 days comes with no cat count attached to it at all. Read all three as a ceiling, divide hard, and let the drawer alert rather than the printed figure set your rhythm.
What litter can I use?
clumping litter, which is what this house already uses, and not much beyond it. Whisker's sifter is built for clumping clay and it warns that non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper and absorbent wood pellet litters may not filter through; it also warns that white or translucent litters like crystal throw off the Whisker Litter-Robot 4's litter-level and drawer-full readings. Petlibro allows clumping, tofu and mixed and rules out crystal, pine and ultra-fine litters. Els Pet asks for clumping or scoopable and warns off muddy bentonite.
What does the app actually control?
None of the three needs a subscription to clean. Whisker says its free app includes weight-based cat identification and a trended view of visits and cycles, which is the part worth opening in a 3-cat house; its paid tier adds history and video. Petlibro says its box recognises cats on its own and keeps doing so when the Wi-Fi drops, with only the cloud features pausing. Els Pet does not publish whether its app tells cats apart, though it does hold the remote safety lock.
Will 3 cats on one box make the house smell?
Odour is the thing that needs your attention rather than the thing the box solves, and each maker answers it differently. Whisker's answer is a carbon filter and odour-trap packs on a cycle it says shortens with more cats, and some owners report urine getting under the globe assembly and leaving a smell that cleaning does not lift. Petlibro's is a sealed drawer that Cats.com's tester found held odour well. Emptying on the alert matters more than either.
