Best robot vacuum under $300

Buy the Roborock Q7 M5 ($229.99). RTINGS names it the best budget robot vacuum it has tested (RTINGS budget list), and for $90.00 more than the cheaper Q7 L5 Vacuum Wars calls it “the clear winner” (Vacuum Wars).

$229.99 at Amazon

For a different job: the Roborock Q7 M5+ ($249.99) is the same robot with a dock that empties the bin; the Dreame D20 Plus ($278.99) is Vacuum Wars’ pick under $300 and the one for pet hair.

Which one should I buy?

Roborock Q7 M5: best for most homes

Best for: most homes with hard floors and carpet. RTINGS says it “removes most pet hair in a single pass” (RTINGS).

The numbers: $229.99 on Amazon; 10,000 Pa rated (Vacuum Wars); LiDAR map (Vacuum Wars); 400 ml bin (Vacuum Wars); 180 minutes official run time (Vacuum Wars).

The trade-off: the plain dock only charges the robot, so you empty the bin and wash the mop pad yourself (RTINGS). The pad does not lift on rugs (Vacuum Wars).

$229.99 at Amazon

Roborock Q7 M5+: best with a self-emptying dock

Best for: short-haired pets or light shedding, and anyone who does not want to empty a bin every few days.

The numbers: $249.99 on Amazon; 10,000 Pa rated (Roborock); dock bag up to 49 days (2.7 L bag) (Roborock); 65 dB in Balanced mode and 60 dB for mopping only (Roborock).

The trade-off: it costs $20.00 more than the Q7 M5 for the dock and a bag you keep buying. The robot is the same one (Vacuum Wars), so long hair wraps its brush too (see the long-hair section).

Dreame D20 Plus: Vacuum Wars’ pick, best for pet owners

Best for: pet owners with carpet. Vacuum Wars calls it its best robot vacuum under $300 while the price stays under $300 (Vacuum Wars).

The numbers: $278.99 on Amazon; 13,000 Pa rated (Dreame); dock bag up to 150 days (5 L bag) (Dreame); 285 minutes of run time (Dreame); 500 ml bin (Dreame).

The trade-off: It lacks dedicated obstacle avoidance (Vacuum Wars), so pick up cords before it runs.

$278.99 at Amazon

Tapo RV30 Max Plus: a LiDAR dock robot at the M5+ price

Best for: someone who wants a LiDAR map and a self-emptying dock and likes a quiet robot.

The numbers: $249.99 on Amazon; 5,300 Pa rated (Tapo); dock bag up to 60 days (3 L bag) (Tapo); 180 minutes of run time (Tapo); 55 dB (Tapo).

The trade-off: its 5,300 Pa is the lowest rating among the robots here that print one, though the suction section shows a Pa rating alone proves little.

$249.99 at Amazon

Roborock Q7 L5: the cheapest robot that draws a map

Best for: a small or mid-size home with mostly hard floors, where price matters most.

The numbers: $139.99 on Amazon; 8,000 Pa rated (Roborock); LiDAR map (Roborock); 400 ml bin (Vacuum Wars); 180 minutes (Vacuum Wars).

The trade-off: Vacuum Wars measured it picking up 12.25% of flattened pet hair, the worst result it has on record (Vacuum Wars). That is the gap the extra money for the Q7 M5 buys.

$139.99 at Amazon

Shark Navigator Self-Empty: a dock without a mop

Best for: a home with hard floors that wants a dock and a LiDAR map and has no use for a mop.

The numbers: $229.99 on Amazon; dock bag up to 60 days (Shark); LiDAR map (Shark); 1-year warranty (Shark).

The trade-off: there is no mop in the box. The Roborock Q7 M5 costs the same and mops.

$229.99 at Amazon

Roomba 105 Combo: iRobot’s app and a dock

Best for: someone who wants iRobot’s app and a self-emptying dock and does not mind a basic cleaner.

The numbers: $269.00 on Amazon; dock bag up to 75 days (iRobot); LiDAR map (iRobot); climbs 16 mm thresholds (iRobot).

The trade-off: RTINGS tested the plain Roomba 105 and says “obstacle avoidance is weak” (RTINGS). The Combo adds the dock and a mop pad.

Shark Matrix Plus: a vibrating mop and a dock

Best for: a home that wants one robot to vacuum, mop and empty itself.

The numbers: $299.99 on Amazon; dock bag up to 60 days (Shark); 110 minutes of run time (Shark); LiDAR map (Shark); 1-year warranty (Shark).

The trade-off: its run time is the shortest on this page, so it covers less floor per charge than the others.

What do RTINGS and Vacuum Wars pick under $300?

Each names a different pick, and each is a fair one for a different home.

  • RTINGS, best budget (updated August 5, 2026): Roborock Q7 M5. Same pick as ours. $229.99 at Amazon
  • RTINGS, best under $300: Dreame L10s Ultra. Its Amazon listing is $339.99, over the cap. RTINGS says it “adds a lot of convenience for the extra money,” but you “may need to have it clean the same area more than once.” (RTINGS) For a dock that washes the mop, see robot vacuums under $500.
  • RTINGS, best cheap: iRobot Roomba 105. The 105 Combo with the dock is $269.00 on Amazon. Buy it for Roomba’s app, not for the best clean. (RTINGS) $269.00 at Amazon
  • Vacuum Wars, best under $300 (November 2026): Dreame D20 Plus. It is on this page at $278.99, and it is the one to buy over the Q7 M5 if you have pets and carpet. (Vacuum Wars) $278.99 at Amazon
  • Vacuum Wars, Q7 L5 against Q7 M5: Roborock Q7 M5. We agree.

What about the Roborock Q10 VF+?

Amazon has no Q10 VF+ listing we can link. Its Amazon sibling, the Q10 S5+ ($329.99), costs more than $300 and has the same 10,000 Pa rating (Roborock) as the Q7 M5+, which is $80.00 less.

Does the Pa number on the box matter?

Not much. Makers rate suction in Pa on their own terms, and testers measure it in kPa at a sealed nozzle. The two do not line up.

Roborock rates the Q7 M5 above the Q7 L5 (Vacuum Wars). Vacuum Wars measured 2.24 kPa sealed suction on the Q7 M5 and 1.95 kPa on the Q7 L5, against a 0.97 kPa category average (Vacuum Wars). The category average is the mean of the robots Vacuum Wars has tested. The Dreame D20 Plus measured 0.53 kPa suction against a 0.99 kPa average (Vacuum Wars), yet it removed 93% of embedded carpet debris (Vacuum Wars). A big number on the box did not decide the carpet result.

Do I need LiDAR mapping?

If your home has more than two rooms, yes. A LiDAR robot scans the room, draws a map, and cleans in straight lines. You can then tell it to clean one room or skip a rug. A robot with no map cannot clean one room on command. Every robot here draws a LiDAR map. Vacuum Wars prefers top-mounted LiDAR for its reliability and mapping accuracy (Vacuum Wars).

Do robot vacuums under $300 handle pet hair?

Short hair, yes. In Vacuum Wars’ test with hair pressed into carpet, the Q7 M5 got 78.5% of flattened pet hair against an 81% average (Vacuum Wars). The Dreame D20 Plus beat it with 91% of flattened pet hair collected (Vacuum Wars). For more, see the best robot vacuum for pet hair, which costs more.

What if I have long-haired pets, rugs or cords?

Long hair: 43% of 7-inch hair wrapped on the Q7 M5 brush and 56% on the Q7 L5, against a 21% average (Vacuum Wars). The Dreame D20 Plus had 0% hair tangle with 7-inch hair (Vacuum Wars), so it is the one to buy: $278.99 at Amazon

Rugs: the Q7 M5 and M5+ pad does not lift, so take it off before they run on carpet (Vacuum Wars).

Cords: RTINGS says the Q7 M5 “can't reliably recognize or avoid cords, pet toys, and other clutter, so you'll need to clear the floor before it starts cleaning.” (RTINGS) For a robot that sees them, see robot vacuums under $500.

Is a self-emptying dock worth it under $300?

If you have pets or carpet, yes. The bin on a plain robot is small and fills fast. A dock moves the dirt into a bag that lasts weeks. Makers give an “up to” figure: the Dreame D20 Plus has the longest-lasting bag here and the Roborock Q7 M5+ the shortest. The cost is the bag you buy when it fills. In a small home with no pets, a plain robot is enough.

How loud are they?

Tapo rates the RV30 Max Plus at 55 dB (Tapo). Roborock lists the Q7 M5+ at 65 dB in Balanced mode and 60 dB for mopping only (Roborock). Run any of them while you are out.

Will the FCC ban stop me from buying one?

No. On July 28, 2026 the FCC added foreign-produced advanced robotic devices to its Covered List, which blocks new approvals. In the FCC’s words, it does not prevent retailers from “continuing to sell, import, or market relevant models approved previously through the FCC’s equipment authorization process” (FCC fact sheet). The Roborock Q7 M5, Roborock Q7 M5+ and Roborock Q7 L5 share FCC ID 2AN2O-RRA0TAC01, approved January 20, 2025 (FCC record), before the rule. The FCC ban guide lists every robot vacuum we could match to an FCC record, and what the rule means for a robot you already own.

What if I can spend a little more than $300?

These cost more than the cap and add a longer-lasting dock or a better mop. Prices are Amazon’s today.
